Gary Player weighed in on the PGA Tour/LIV Golf merger

Gary Player, a nine-time major champion, dropped some knowledge on the LIV Golf/PGA Tour merger.

“We made the mistake in the beginning when the Saudis only wanted five tournaments to put in $20 million a tournament, think about that, and they were turned down and that was the start of the war.”

Player summed it up nicely. The PGA Tour had a chance to work with the Saudis before any of this even happened and they were greedy in trying to control everything. That led to the Saudis establishing LIV and that money was then given to players like DJ, Brooks, Bryson, and Rahm.

“It started off badly and it’s not going to get better. And now, when you’re in a tournament, can you honestly say I’m beating the best in the world?”

The one thing that Gary Player seems to understand that LIV haters don’t is the money.

“Well, they can come back on the [PGA] Tour if they give the money back. Are you crazy? You gonna give $540 million dollars back? No sir, that’s a lot of money.”

Anyone expecting someone to give back generational wealth is crazy, but while I am a LIV supporter, I can admit that it would be nice to watch the LIV guys playing against Rory, Scottie, Xander, etc.

Unfortunately, that’s not what we get right now.
