The Players Championship has decided to make their mark as the “Fifth Major” by increasing the purse to be the highest of any event on the schedule.
Per Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard:
“The purse for The Players Championship is increasing for the second consecutive year.
A jump from $11 million last year to $12.5 million for this year’s event, set for March 14-17 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., makes The Players’ purse the largest currently on the PGA Tour schedule.”
The PGA Tour increased the purse by $500,000 in 2018, but now that it has moved from May to March, this should help entice quite a few players who may decide to skip the event because of the move (I know, that sounds crazy right?).
The purse is now bigger than the U.S. Open’s $12 million dollar payout.
With his win last season, Webb Simpson claimed $1.98 million of the $11 million dollar purse and if we use the 18% going to the winner rule that would make the 2019 payout $2.25 million. That is higher than Brooks Koepka’s $2.16 million dollar win at the 2018 U.S. Open.
