There could be a new world number one after The Players

Dustin Johnson’s lead on the number one world ranking is slowly disappearing.

Johnson has held the number one ranking since the Genesis Open in 2017, but he could lose it to one of four guys behind him this week.

Here is what needs to happen for any of the four guys behind him to supplant him:

  1. Justin Rose needs a win to have a chance at moving up from fifth to first.
  2. Jon Rahm needs a win or a solo second-place finish to move up from third.
  3. Jordan Spieth needs a solo second or a win to move up from fourth.
  4. Justin Thomas has a chance to move to the number one spot even with a missed cut.

And for DJ to hold onto that number one ranking, he will need to finish in a two-way tie for 11th or better.

Considering since 2008 he hasn’t finished higher than T12, and that came last year, it is highly likely that there could be a new number one after this week.
