While the majority of the golf headlines this week are focusing on the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the corresponding bracket, there is an opposite-field Tour event this week that has a very intriguing name on the tee sheet.
Tony Romo is scheduled to make his PGA Tour debut this week at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. Yes, THAT Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS NFL announcer.
You might remember Romo was granted a special sponsors exemption to play in the event in the Dominican Republic. The exemption was announced last month when Romo played as an amateur at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
While Romo has played in countless Pro-Am events and has even tried at qualifying for the US Open on several occasions, this will be his first time teeing it up in a regular Tour event, and he’s not taking it lightly.
“I’ll be treating it very serious,” Romo told reporters Tuesday. “My wife will tell you she hasn’t seen me much over the last month. But if you know me at all, I think you know if I care about something I’m going to commit to it 100 percent. So like I said, you’ll get the best I’ve got this week.”
Romo, who plays to a +0.3 handicap, will tee off at 8:10 a.m. ET Thursday alongside Dru Love and Denny McCarthy.
