The American Ryder Cup team is starting to take shape and will look similar to 2016. At least as far as the captains are concerned.
That’s because, on Tuesday, U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk announced the additions of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker to the team as vice-captains. They will join Davis Love III who had been previously announced as an assistant.
If it seems like deja vu, well that’s because to an extent it is. Two years ago at Hazeltine, it was Love who was the captain with Stricker, Woods, and Furyk playing the role of assistants.
Stricker is no stranger to being in the team room of an international event on both sides. In addition to his 3-7-1 individual record as a Ryder Cup player, Stricker has served as a vice-captain two other times, two years ago under Love and four years ago under Tom Watson at Gleneagles. He also guided the U.S. squad to victory last year at the Presidents Cup.
“This is a great honor for me, and I am once again thrilled to be a vice-captain,” Stricker said in a statement. “We plan to keep the momentum and the spirit of Hazeltine alive and channel it to our advantage in Paris.”
For Woods, this will be his third vice captainship. He served as an assistant last year at the Presidents Cup and in 2016 at the Ryder Cup.
A fourth vice-captain will be announced at a later date.
The Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 28-30 at Le Golf National in Paris. The American side will look to end a 25-year drought on European soil. The last time the United States won a Ryder Cup overseas was in 1993 at The Belfry in England.
