Tony Romo gets another sponsor’s exemption into a PGA Tour event

Tony Romo accepted a sponsor’s exemption into the AT&T Byron Nelson last month. Obviously, Romo being a Dallas fan favorite, that exemption makes plenty of sense considering where the tournament currently falls on the new PGA Tour schedule – it’s the week before the PGA Championship and there will be plenty of guys who skip it to rest up.

Romo should help draw in a few more fans in Dallas alongside another Dallas native, Jordan Spieth.

Now, Romo has accepted ANOTHER sponsor’s exemption into another event THIS SEASON. Romo will tee it up for a second straight year at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship later this month.

Romo famously participated in the event last season and finished … umm … dead last at +15. He missed the cut by 16 strokes and played very poorly. It really wasn’t even worth mentioning his participation in the event even though we did just that because it’s always interesting to see someone try to cross-over to a high level of golf.

However, since then, Romo has stepped up his game quite a bit. He won the American Century Championship, which means he is basically the best celebrity golfer in the country, in Tahoe, and also won an amateur tournament in Wisconsin by a nine-stroke margin. To add to that, Romo made it out of Q School pre-qualifying – only because someone ahead of him incorrectly marked a scorecard. Still, that’s a pretty solid advancement in his game.

Even though Romo provided one of the more exciting moments of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this season, he had to withdraw alongside Jim Furyk after carding a 70/65 opening two rounds.

The Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship is an opposite field event from the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, so his entry doesn’t seem like that big of a deal considering most of the big names will be playing in Austin.
