The Open will return to Royal Liverpool in 2022

The Open Championship, or the British Open if you are one of those who refuses to call it its actual name The Open, will be returning to Royal Liverpool in 2022 for the 151st edition of the tournament.

The course in Hoylake, England, has hosted the major 12 times. The two most recent winners were Tiger Woods in 2006 (his 3rd Claret Jug) and Rory McIlroy in 2014 (his 3rd major win).

The order of rotation for now is: Royal Portrush in 2019, Royal St. George’s in 2020, and St. Andrew’s in 2021 for the 150th edition of the tournament.

“The Open shares a strong affinity with England’s Golf Coast and following the success of the Championship at Royal Birkdale two years ago we know that there will be tremendous excitement among golf fans at its return to Royal Liverpool,” said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the Royal & Ancient, which stages the tournament.

“Its famous links has a cherished history and has produced a revered group of Champion Golfers, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy most recently. It will be fascinating to see who will emerge from the world-class field to lift the Claret Jug in 2022.”

Royal Liverpool first hosted The Open in 1897.

After 2022, it is expected that the tournament will return to Scotland and Muirfield.
