Changes Reportedly Coming To FedEx Cup Playoff Format

There’s no question that the current FedEx Cup Playoff format needs to be changed. Sure, the current model is better than the model that was originally created, but as we have seen over the past few years, it’s time to make another change.

Well, it looks like the PGA Tour is ready to make changes. However, they might not necessarily be for the better.

As Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press reported on Monday, several sources are saying that changes to the playoff format are coming.

Five people aware of the discussions say FedExCup points will not be involved in the final playoff event at East Lake. Instead, the No. 1 player would start the Tour Championship at 10 under par, with scores to par staggered depending on the 30 players’ position in the standings.

The winner will be the FedExCup champion, and the bonus is expected to be more than the current $10 million prize.

That’s right, instead of the old points system, the leader of the playoffs come East Lake will have a 10 shot lead over the guy coming in at 30th before they even tee off.

If you think that new proposal sounds a little ridiculous, you aren’t alone. In fact, some on Golf Twitter this morning even thought the entire thing was a joke.

While I think we can all agree that the current format needs to change, this is likely not the right answer. Let’s hope that this is just the initial proposal and that it will get changed around into something that makes a little more sense.
