Adam Scott qualifies for U.S. Open in Columbus

Here’s something we haven’t seen in a whilek, Adam Scott had to qualify for a major championship.

Scott entered last week at the Memorial Tournament as the 65th ranked player in the world. The top 60 automatically earn a spot in the second major of the year, and Scott merely needed to finish high enough last week to improve his ranking to 60th. He entered the final round in a tie for 11th, but after a one-over 71, fell to 35th and only climbed one spot in the world rankings.

That left him unsure of whether he would attempt to qualify for the event, but Scott showed up to the Columbus, Ohio qualifier and after rounds of 66 and 72 he earned one of the final 14 spots available.

“I am pumped. It has been an epic day. I haven’t played one of these in a long time but I really did enjoy playing today,” he said after the round.

In qualifying for the U.S. Open, Scott has continued his streak of playing in every major since the 2001 Open Championship. The only player with a longer streak than Scott’s 68 is Sergio Garcia with 76.

“It’s a nice streak to keep going but it will be better if I win the U.S. Open. I am playing all these majors to win them not just to show up, so I’d like to make the most of this opportunity,” he said. “Today was a bit of a grind but somehow I’ve snuck through. The form has been coming around, so if I can have a nice week this week preparing and get myself in shape, I am really looking forward to Shinnecock.”

Shane Lowry also qualified in Columbus when he tied with Sungjae Im for first. Keegan Bradley also had to qualify and did so by earning third place.
