Byron Nelson Picks

This week the PGA Tour rolls into Dallas where they’ll play on a brand new course at Trinity Forest Golf Club. The links-style course offers something completely different than what we are used to seeing weekly on the Tour. We’ll see if players like it or not, but the risk-reward on many of the holes will definitely be fun to watch.

Let’s face it, Sergio Garcia hasn’t had a great 2018 so far on the course. Since his infamous “Tin Cup” moment at the Masters, he has only made 1 cut, finishing 70th at this past week’s PLAYERS Championship. The water continued to haunt him too as he found the drink at 17 on Thursday.

So why on earth would I pick Sergio this week?

Well, because of everything I have mentioned above. At some point Sergio has to turn it around and why not have it happen in his new “adopted” state of Texas. Plus, he won a member-member earlier in the year at Trinity Forrest playing with one of the course designers, Ben Crenshaw. Sergio will use his “local knowledge” this week and get the W.

The Stiff Shaft

Lets face it, the only player who really has any knowledge of this course currently makes his home in the Dallas area. Jordan Spieth, who is slightly concerned that his peers won’t show up because the course is so different, is the odds on favorite to win…as he should be.

Spieth played well enough last week at The Players, a place he hasn’t really fared well at over his career, to get my attention this week. That, combined with the fact that he’s seen the course before, gives him an advantage this week so I’m going with the Golden Boy.

However, if Spieth fails to get it going early, don’t be surprised if someone like Marc Leishman, who enjoys playing in the wind, jumps to the top of the leaderboard.
