PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Before the Players Championship began, we informed you that Dustin Johnson could lose his spot at the top of the world rankings.
One of those scenarios involved Justin Thomas, who literally could have missed the cut and had Johnson finished low enough, still jumped him for the number one spot. Johnson needed to finish better than T11, he didn’t, he finished T17 and Thomas will now move into the number one spot when the rankings are released on Monday.
It’s hard to say who is more deserving of the spot right now because any of the top 5 ranked guys could, and probably deserve to be ranked number 1 for several reasons.
Thomas will now get his turn, but he’ll have to keep his foot down if he wants to hold onto it because DJ, Rahm, Spieth, and Rose are all right on his heels.
