Rory McIlroy is one major away from the career grand slam. That major? The Masters. McIlroy has yet to win a green jacket and it is definitely something that is on his mind.
In an interview with the Telegraph’s James Corrigan, McIlroy said he only cares about the Masters.
“I don’t care about the US Open or The Open Championship – The Masters is now the biggest tournament in the world, the most amount of eyeballs, the most amount of hype, everything is at Augusta,” he said. “It’s the most special tournament we play and it’s the one everyone desperately wants to win.”
McIlroy was apparently so dejected after being in the final pairing at this year’s Masters that his wife had to force him out of the house.
In his after-round press conference, he remained bullish, maintaining that it had been “a positive week”, but as he prepared to make his competitive return for Thursday’s first round at the Wells Fargo Championship, he admitted that he struggled in the days and weeks following, with his wife Erica finally persuading him to leave their Florida house.
“It was just the quiet moments when you’re staring off into the distance and it got to the point where I needed to see a bit of daylight and do my normal things,” McIlroy said.
I could see that. He made it into the final pair on Sunday with a shot to win and couldn’t beat his Ryder Cup rival Patrick Reed, or a few other Americans for that matter.
McIlroy will eventually win a green jacket. He’s just too good not to, but it will take a really good showing for him to do it because the young guys on Tour are hungry and eager to cement their names alongside his as major champion.
