Report: PGA Tour Could Be Returning To Detroit

According to a report in the Detroit News, the PGA Tour could soon be making a return to The Motor City.

The report indicates that the Tour is “believed to be close” to an agreement to bring a tournament to the Detroit area beginning in 2019 with Detroit Golf Club the leading candidate for a host course.

As for who the title sponsor would be, the report seems to indicate that Quicken Loans has expressed interest.

A title-sponsor candidate would be Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans, which sponsored The National in the Washington, D.C., area from 2014-17, but pulled out after last season’s event. Quicken Loans had told the PGA Tour that its priority is a tournament in Detroit.

While it is unclear where the event would fit into the 2019 schedule and beyond, it is believed that it would get a summer date. There’s also the possibility that the Detroit event would take a spot of the current D.C. event, including its late June/early July spot on the schedule.

If Detroit does get a Tour event in 2019, it will be the first event in the state of Michigan since 2009 when Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club hosted the now-defunct Buick Open for the final time.
