Two weeks ago, Jim Nantz said in an interview with Jessica Marksbury that he thought fellow CBS football announcer Tony Romo would tee it up at a PGA Tour event this year.
Well, maybe we should ask Nantz for next week’s Powerball numbers because apparently, he can see into the future.
On Wednesday, Romo received a sponsors exemption into the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship. The event, which is in its first year on the PGA Tour schedule after previously being a Web.com Tour event, will be held March 22-25 and played opposite the WGC-Match Play.
“As a professional athlete, the love and thrill of competition never entirely leaves you,” Romo, 37, said in a release. “Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions. So, playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour.”
While Romo has been a staple on the celebrity and pro-am circuit, this will be his first time playing in a strictly professional Tour event. He has made several unsuccessful attempts at qualifying for the U.S. Open.
Romo, who is a scratch golfer, will be the first former athlete to tee it up at a PGA Tour event since Mark Rypien at the 1992 Kemper Open. Rypien shot 80-91 at the D.C.-area event and finished last by 13 shots.
Romo is playing as a celebrity in this week’s AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am where he will be playing with Will Zalatoris.
